Ma Ma Thai, Phnom Penh

Writer's picture: MarkMark

MaMa Thai, in the heart of BKK1, is a bit confusing when you first arrive – the eyes don't know where to look first. The ground floor is set up like a street night market, the upper floor the main restaurant area – and in between rooms and rooms of Thai things ... as if someone started various bizarre collections of items from flea markets for decades and decades!

Add to that neon signs everywhere and colourful, retro advertising and you have ... MaMa Thai.

And the food is excellent.

I ordered a Pomelo Salad (yes, a standard for me, but I do love it so!!) with Shrimp ...

And, because I was still feeling a bit under the weather from the long flight, a big bowl of soup. Gaeng Juëd Tao Hoo Moo Sab, to be exact.

Sound exotic? Break it down:

  • Gaeng Jued = clear, spiced broth

  • Tao Hoo = Tofu

  • Moo = Pork (Not beef )

  • Moo Sab = Minced pork....

So: Clear vegetable broth with tofu and minced pork.

This one even had seaweed in it for extra healthy points.

The pot was so huge, I got 5 bowls out of it and there was still some left in the pot.

Price

The Pomelo salad with shrimp, the huge bowl of Gaeng Juëd, a bottle of water and a draft beer cost me under $18 (16€)
