Oslo Gardermoen Airport

Oslo Gardermoen Airport (OSL) is my favorite airport to fly in and out of : cheap flights to Asia, super quick security and baggage claim, and very nice airport hotels…

Architecture

The sweeping wooden ceiling beams support a wave-shaped roof covered with solar panels on top. Inside, real trees, vertical walls of moss, brushed steel with snowflake-like patterns, and deep, rich, wood tones have you wondering whether you are inside or outside – the entire airport exudes an appreciation of nature and ecological sustainability.

And when did you last see an airport with security waiting times of 5 to 15 minutes? And baggage claim is just as fast.

3 on-site Airport Hotels

Outside the main building, the terminal is framed by not one, not two but three airport hotels: outside to your left is the Radisson and the Radisson Red… and to your right, the Radisson Blu.

The hotels are connected by covered walkways with glass walls that let you enjoy the fresh air of nature (the whole airport feels like it’s in a Nordic forest) whilst keeping rain and snow far away from your head and your luggage.

I timed both walks: Radisson and Red, which both share a common building, are a five minute walk; Blu is a three minute walk in the other direction. But more about the hotels later…

Trains to Oslo

In between the two hotels and accessible from inside the terminal as well, is Oslo airports train station (“Oslo Lufthavn”), with trains every 10-20 minutes to take you into town (train ride time: 20 to 25 minutes).

The airport express “Flytoget” is well marketed, but also more expensive and the regional trains… Actual time savings to Oslo’s Central Station (“Oslo Sentralstajon” or simply “Oslo S”) is only about five or six minutes: you decide.
